WEEKLY E-LETTER Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 • January Luncheon |

|
JANUARY 28 LUNCHEON Negotiate with Confidence: Ever present work to a new client or prospect and discover the decision-maker was actually a committee? Or, participate on a collaborative project where personality dynamics seemed to make group decision painfully slow or impossible? Working with a group of people - where several people must come together to form a collective decision - is a challenge. In order for a group to make a decision, they must all arrive at consensus. But, what does consensus mean and what can you do to get the group to move toward it? At the January luncheon, Jeanette Nyden, J.D. will talk about the different levels of consensus and how you can use this information to aid the group decision process. Drawing from her many years as a criminal trial attorney and family dispute mediator, she will show us how to gauge levels of consensus, effectively address obstacles, and motivate people to collaborate for mutually beneficial results. About the Speaker: Jeanette Nyden, J.D., a former trial attorney and assistant Public Defender in Cook County (Chicago) uses a down-to-earth, humor-filled speaking style to train business professionals to negotiate in any situation with confidence. She is a mediator at the Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution and part of the training team at the King County Dispute Resolution Center where she trains new conciliators on problem-solving techniques during negotiation. Also see Jeanette Nyden's website at Sound Resolutions: www.soundresolutions.net RESERVATION DEADLINE: LOCATION: PARKING: You may park yourself in the 2-hour free parking lot in front of the restaurant (formerly Latitude 47) Ask the receptionist for the Guild luncheon and she will direct you downstairs to where they have their meeting rooms. WE: Every business has a special 'niche' it either targets or is known for, what is yours? Ann: Brand unity for print and web. We design web sites and printed business collateral so they work together for more effective marketing, with emphasis on consistent visual messaging. Most of our clients are either directly involved in or are patrons of the arts. WE: When did you first decide to enter this industry? Ann: I decided to enter the field in 1988 as an independent, and actually did so in 1989 for print design, then added web design and development in 1997. WE: How did you come up with your company name? Ann: We’ve been Digital Media Communications, reflecting our expertise in technology and backend custom software development. However, that’s really a secondary attribute. Our client feedback has been that they come to us and stay with us because of my intense focus on visual arts and visual language – my passion is fine art, my raison d’etre is studying and understanding visual language and its dialects and applying that successfully to attract my clients’ target markets. My goal is to create strong, consistent branding across print and web to help my clients successfully meet and surpass their marketing goals. So the new name will become Brand Unity! Inc., and will include custom visual communications design for print and web, and custom backend development, as needed. WE: What type of education did you have and has it served you well? Ann: I earned my B.A, but stayed closely affiliated to universities for many years after that, studying art, science, and computer technology, continuing broad-based coursework, working in research labs, participating in community committees, and in general, pursuing any academic interest that captured my attention. I became passionate about the arts and absorbed by technology, and even though my academic studies were wildly eclectic, the university was deeply enriching -- it set the foundation for my life. Recently I taught advertising and graphic design for a year and a half in the Visual Communications Technology degree program at Shoreline Community College. Teaching reinforced my belief that the university is extraordinarily important to the graphic and fine arts industry, and that in our roles as visual communicators, we are truly culturalists, expressing and propagating the “zeitgeist” or spirit of our time. It is important for us, as communicators, to be broadly educated and keenly aware of the social currents and diverse visual languages that speak to our era. We define and document history whether we are working in the commercial or the fine arts. WE: Who was your greatest influence? Ann: Teachers – Margaret Davidson at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art – by far the “Best Teacher” award (I’m expert at teacher evaluations); Mike Larson, founder of the VCT degree program at Shoreline Community College, because of his life-long dedication and contribution to both commercial design and fine art. I also love late modern Polish poster art and most of the work of Grapus. I’m inspired by Mary Wells Lawrence, Shirley Polykoff, Paula Scher, Margo Chase, and the careers of my friends and associates Norma Goldstein, Jeanette Nyden, Nancy Frey, and my husband, David Warman. WE: When did you first join the Graphic Artists Guild? Ann: Last year, I believe. At least that’s when I joined the Board and began attending meetings regularly. WE: What influenced you to join? Ann: My business goals are to actively affiliate with other artists to provide excellent, partnered services to clients, as custom projects require. Working with other professionals on the Guild’s committees provides the groundwork for easy transition into partnered, professional affiliations. WE: What are your plans for the future? Ann: To continue to provide work that significantly contributes to my clients’ success, as well as to my own, and to build strong partnered relationships with other illustrators, designers, artists, and software developers. WE: What volunteer work have you done for the Guild, Awards? Ann: I’m webmaster for the Chapter. One of my recent websites won Golden Web award for design excellence, achieving over 320,000 hits in the month of July, and doubling online sales in a secure eCommerce section that I designed and developed for the client. Also, see my recent feature article in Media Index magazine on search engine optimization. I’ll be teaching a Visual Branding: Standing Out from the Crowd seminar on February 24th at the Women’s Business Center, Seattle. To see images of Ann's work, click here.
It's Official!
The SPGA/Seattle Chapter's Member Only Job Announcements reached an all time high of 65 job announcements. When we started to keep track three years ago this chapter had 40 job announcements. This steady increase in job announcements is due in part to word of mouth, the weekly e-letter, and the increasing number of Guild members and Guest who send in job announcements the moment they hear of them. The Guild's placement on these jobs announcements has slowly dipped. While we once placed 98% of all jobs, that has reduced to 92%. But, with a growth of over 20% in listings, I think we can all agree that the job announcements are a success for our membership. If you have, or hear of a timely job announcement, please send it to markmonlux@comcast.net. If you would like to receive the Job Announcement notices, all you have to do is join the Graphic Artists Guild. SPGA/Seattle Chapter members receive the job announcements within 24 hours of posting.
SUPPORT FELLOW GUILD MEMBER,
Dear Fellow Guild Members, would love your support this weekend to go and see my film "Teacher's Pet." I have always been grateful to the illustration community and have always felt it was important with our individual successes to give back. The first weekend is very important to get as many into the theaters as possible. I am also interested in your feedback. I am very proud of the film. This is one of the first times that a major entertainment company has produced an animated feature based on a well-known contemporary artist?s style and creation. All the backgrounds are painted on canvas to emulate my painting style. I worked on the film as the Creator/Executive Producer and Art Director. The film stars the voice talents of Nathan Lane, Kelsey Grammer, David Ogden Stiers, Jerry Stiller, Debra Jo Rupp, Paul Reubens, Megan Mullally, and Wallace Shawn. This hilarious film was written by the Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, and relentlessly and subversively directed by Timothy Björklund. Produced with an iron thumb by Steven Swofford. The film is rated PG. You can see the trailer online at: Thank you.
CHANGES on the CHAPTER BOARD
Our treasurer Nicole Roberts got a textile design job in Minnesota. Louise Holder, our past Treasurer will fill in for her until our chapter elections coming in May. We are going to miss the great work which Nicole has done for our chapter. We wish her the best success as she takes her seat in the intimate apparel design shop at Target's headquarters. Send congratulations to Nicole at nrillustration@aol.com The only qualification you need in order to fill one of these seats is to be a voting Guild member. And you can't use the argument that "I don't have any experience." Nobody who took them in the past had experience. We are looking for folks who know they have to give back a little to be a part of the whole experience. Our Chapter Board needs members to step forward for the following positions. DISCLAIMER / REMOVE REQUESTS If you want to be removed from the SPGA/Seattle Chapter's Weekly E-mail list you can go to www.seattleguild.org and unsubscribe. Or send your request to markmonlux@comcast.net If you suddenly stop receiving the weekly e-letter please check your subscription at the website and if you continue to have problems, contact us. The affiliation agreement with the Graphic Artists Guild prohibits any use or sale of its membership lists outside group events or use. All emails addresses are kept in strict confidence. The postings in this e-mail are a compilation of postings sent into the e-mail coordinator over the prior week. Contributed postings are often received or forwarded second and even third hand. Thus, the provided information is bound to be a bit fuzzy at times, as postings are not painfully researched for accuracy. Also, little if any proofing is done to the announcements that are posted. They are generally posts as-is. Postings that originate from the e-mail coordinator are bound to be full of grammatical and spelling errors as this is completely voluntary service done by an overworked, tired and often confused artist who is trying to pound this thing out before Buffy the Vampire Slayer comes on. Please feel free to respond with postings, comments, questions, and requests for removal, to the e-mail coordinator: Mark Monlux at markmonlux@comcast.net.
