May 31st LUNCHEON PROGRAM:
3D and Animation Wizard Henk Dawson

Since 1989, Henk Dawson has been working with clients such as Apple, ESPN, Fox, FedEx, IBM, Hasbro, Intel, Microsoft, Nintendo, Pepsi, Taco Bell, and Volvo. He has received many accolades both for his illustration work and his animation endeavors, including a permanent placement in the California Museum of Science.

He has taught at the School of Visual Concepts, has been a speaker for the 3D Design Conference, AIGA’s Currents Conference; Apple’s Symposium and at the Society of Illustrators/New York.

He is also a longtime Graphic Artist Guild member and, along with Kristen Dawson, former Co-VP of Programs for the Seattle Chapter. Henk will show a selection of his work and lead a discussion on the illustration industry.

Photoworks creative manager, Karen Meyers, is looking for an illustrator who displayed her portfolio at the SPGA / Seattle Graphic Artists Guild December 7, 2005 Cocktail Party and Portfolio Review. This artist does whimsy drawings for greeting cards and was selling cards that night. Meyers liked her style and would like to talk to her about designing cards for PhotoWorks. If you know who that artists is, please contact Photoworks: 206-281-1272.

The SPGA / Seattle Graphic Artists Guild annually holds its open portfolio networking, evening Holiday gala meeting during early December. All artists who attend are invited to display their portfolios.

The meeting is traditionally a sell-out and in recent years has been held at the Columbia Tower Club, 75th floor, with spectacular night views of the city lights, open cash bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres. Excellent opportunity for extedning your presence and learning about wht the SPGA /Seattle Graphic Aertists Guild can do for you. Stay tuned for more details next Fall.

The Position: Shoreline welcomes diverse candidates with a vision of excellence. Shoreline seeks talented, innovative faculty who can adapt to a variety of teaching situations and who work effectively in a campus that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding.

The Visual Arts Center stresses a comprehensive approach to fine arts and technology in teaching students about elements of design and composition, acquiring knowledge of materials and techniques, and exploring personal creativity. The Visual Arts curriculum is committed to a cross-disciplinary approach to fine art and communication design. Traditional and evolving approaches in a breadth of design and technology media as well as exploration in contemporary trends are essential to the development of the program.

Teaching assignments may include the following areas: Graphic Design, 2-D Foundation Design, Digital Photography, Animation, Product Design, Drawing, Computer-based Image Design and Editing, and any closely related curriculum as they may develop. A portion of the teaching assignment may be in the evening program and/or at off-campus locations.

In addition to teaching multiple levels of Graphic Design, the successful candidate will be expected to assist in developing and maintaining all facets of the curriculum for an integrated course sequence and evolving visual communication degree. Activities include course design, development, evaluations and coordinating portfolio assessment, working with industry liaisons and mentors, and providing leadership and evolution within the department and in design technology. Other professional responsibilities include advising students, developing courses and curricula, participating in college governance, department/division and campus-related professional activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design or related field (Degree must be conferred by September 1, 2006)
2. Applied working experience in Graphic Design (2 years minimum)
3. Demonstrated interest, skill and experience in teaching
4. Willing to be First Aid certified and to obtain vocational certification by the State of Washington

Desired Education, Experience and Abilities:
1. Master’s Degree in Art or related field
2. Two years minimum work experience in the field of Graphic Design
3. Successful teaching experience in at least two areas listed under the position description above
4. Evidence of creative program and/or curriculum development
5. Two years experience teaching adults in an academic setting
Skills and Abilities:
1. Impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching
2. Provide leadership in program development and curriculum
3. Show commitment to student success and the ability to communicate with students with a wide range of abilities
4. Advise, motivate and challenge students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
5. Collaborate and negotiate with different perspectives and value sets in an integrated fine arts and professional technical program
6. Contribute to the College’s diversity initiatives and foster a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation
7. Interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
