Student Spotlight

The Guild likes to interview students who are seen as having high potential by their teachers.  If you're a teacher and have a pupil whose talents are exceptional,  please contact this chapter about having him or her featured. This time the spotlight falls on Claire Hoover attending Central Washington University.

Claire Hoovers Sierra Club Campaign's Tagline: This isn't quite what we had in mind."

GUILD: How did you become interested in art and graphic design?

HOOVER: As a child I created a newsletter to hand out to my friends and family. I was a member of the art club and a yearbook editor in high school. It just seemed the right direction to go in when I started college. I remember reading a quote by Confucius, "Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life."

GUILD: What led you to your college for this area of study?

HOOVER: I began my schooling at Seattle Central Community College and took several design classes. I found out about the Graphic Design program at Central Washington University through a classmate. Her sister had recently graduated with her degree in Graphic Design and my classmate recommended that I visit the school and see if CWU would be a good fit for me. As it turns out, it was the perfect fit.

GUILD: What are your software application skills?

HOOVER: I am up to date with the newest Adobe software, InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, and GoLive CS2.

GUILD: Please give us a description of your current artistic direction.

HOOVER: As my college experience comes to a close I am trying to focus on creating a foundation in concept for each one of my projects.  I am applying this to every project I work on, whether it is for a freelance client, a school project or for my personal growth.

GUILD: Talk about your current plans for after graduation.

HOOVER: My plan is to move back to Seattle, WA after graduation.  I will be going on some informational interviews  over spring break. I will also be interviewing for my second internship opportunity. I completed an internship in Seattle last summer for a small corporation at Progressive International,  and I am hoping that this internship with a small graphic design firm will help complement my other work experiences.  My hope is to start working for a small firm in Seattle after my internship.

You can see more of Claire's work on her ever-growing website.
