Student Spotlight On Daisy Fry

GUILD: How did you become interested in graphic design?

DAISY: Graphic design in my home state of Montana was not a well established career choice. Through the support of my creative parents, I was able to spend my final semester of college studying in Switzerland and found myself immersed in Swiss design and European culture. There I discovered that design affects everyone, through objects, books and general life media. It changed the way I look at the world. I realized that I wanted to pursue a creative career, to engage in the world of art and design.

After graduating, I moved to Seattle and worked primarily as the Fine Art Production Coordinator for Dale Chihuly’s publishing company, Portland Press. During that time I also assisted the Creative and Production Department with book mock-ups, selecting and scanning images, and familiarizing myself with design software. I enjoyed being a part of the creation of something not only beautiful, but also tangible, something that you could physically hold in your hand when it was finished. I love the combination of good typography with stunning images. I decided to take classes at the School of Visual Concepts. At SVC I felt certain I was going in the right direction. I felt a very strong connection to graphic design, not just as a communication tool or a way of solving a problem, but also as a form of expression.

GUILD: What led you to your college for this area of study?

DAISY: When I decided to seriously pursue my design education, I held informational interviews with several designers working in the field. Initially I investigated whether I was considering the right profession. I also asked where I should attend classes. I was, and still am not, interested in cookie cutter education or experiences. SVC has consistently been highly recommended and has proven to be a fantastic experience.

GUILD: What is your artistic direction?

DAISY: My current artistic direction continues to move further toward print media. I integrate hand-rendered type, collaged, and found objects to create dynamic and original design. I enjoy moving between extremes of expression and style: a clean modern style, such as the work I create for Howard House gallery, to a more hand-made unconventional design, such as the Seattle International Film Festival rock party poster. Inspiration for me comes from art, film, drawing classes, typography, and architecture. I continue to look to my surroundings and experiences for ideas. I look forward to working at a design firm where I can be a contributing designer and simultaneously absorb experience and knowledge from senior designers.

GUILD: What are your software application skills?

DAISY: I am skilled in Photoshop and Illustrator on both the Mac and PC platforms. I am especially familiar with InDesign and I continue to develop my software skills with each new project. I have strong image color-correction abilities. Beyond the software, I excel at the production side of print design.

GUILD: What are your plans after graduation?

DAISY: I plan to continue taking classes at SVC. There is no official graduation and there is always something to I want to improve on and learn. My current plan is to procure a job where I have the opportunity to work with a team of creative people in a collaborative environment. I thrive in an atmosphere where no work day is the same and the work itself is creatively demanding.

May Luncheon Topic: Modern Dog: 20 Years of Poster Art

Robynne Raye and Michael Strassburger are the principals of Modern Dog Design Co., a Seattle design and illustration studio based out of a house in North Seattle. Most recently they have worked with Coca-Cola, the NBA, Nordstrom, adidas, Hasbro and the Seattle Aquarium, doing everything from new product development to flash animation to logo identity work. But perhaps their most visible work is their posters which are collected in museums around the world. Come and hear Mike and Robynne discuss their latest project, a 20-year poster retrospective book project to be published in early 2008 through Chronicle Books. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll wonder why.
