January 2008 Workshop Meeting:
A DOUBLE-FEATURE TO WRANGLE YOUR DIGITAL ASSETS
Font Management and Asset Management
Wrangle Your Digital Assets

Where? Rock Salt Steaks and Seafood on Lake Union1232 Westlake Ave. North, Seattle, WA 98109 206-284-1047

When? Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Arrive 11:30 a.m., meeting noon to 1:30 p.m.

What? Join Jason Hoppe and Craig Swanson of CreativeTechs for a presentation on font management and organization of digital images for graphic designers. CreativeTechs is Seattle’s premiere team of Macintosh experts and consultants focused on erasing technical headaches for Seattle photographers, design firms, ad agencies, and in-house creative departments.

Font Management: Want a fast, stable, healthy Mac? You better get a handle on your fonts. We will help you understand what is going on with all those odd font folders scattered around your Mac, and we will help you slim down your system fonts so InDesign doesn’t take forever to scroll to Zapf Dingbats. As a bonus, we will reveal what has changed about font management in Mac OS X Leopard!

Do you know what a .dfont is? Or the difference between TrueType and Postscript? Or do you have the slightest idea about which font folder of the three at your disposal you should use? How about this one: Should you use Apple's Font Book or go out and buy Suitcase for font management? We will answer these questions and a few hundred more in this informative talk expertly delivered by CreativeTech's Craig Swanson and Jason Hoppe. We will also look into activating, deactivating, and previewing fonts; the sanity-restoring value of doing a font tune-up on your system; and third party font management software.

Asset Management: How do you keep your growing image library under control? Learn to organize large collections of images. Come learn how to add keywords, manage metadata, and many other image management tricks.

I want to start a greeting card company.

Dear  Mark,
WW I just read your tutorial on How to Establish Basic Estimate Guidelines.  It was quite helpful.  I am not a graphic artist myself. I am in the process of starting a greeting card company.
WW I hope you wouldn’t mind answering a question for me.  How would you suggest I find out the approximate fees for this type of work?  I need this information in order to write my business plan (for cost of goods sold and other financials).
WW Any help or advice would be much appreciated!
WW – Joy N. Tedaé

Dear Joy,
WW I always encourage people who are starting in business to go out and investigate professional organizations who have made it their business to compile practices, prices and ethics of their industry for their members. Since you are interested in starting a greeting card company I have a couple of suggestions for you:WW

The Greeting Card Association.
WW Their website (http://www.greetingcard.org) will provide details of the organization. Become a member and you get a free copy of the Greeting Card Industry Directory (a $150 value), an extremely valuable book as it provides information on the industry and over 2,000 publishers and industry suppliers.

LIMA, License Industry Merchandise Association.
WW Their website (http://www.licensing.org) is a font of information, but you will have to become a member to get access to all the really good stuff. Don’t flinch at the price; like any organization, the information you receive as a member is far more valuable to you in the long run than the cost of membership.
WW You can learn more about LIMA by going to http://www.licensemag.com, which is another great resource. You can subscribe to their magazine for free, and they have a several different RSS feeds to keep you up to date on who is selling what to whom.

WW Also, a quick way to check out the artist’s perspective, including prices, is to check out The Graphic Artists Guild Handbook, Pricing and Ethical Guidelines, 12th edition (just released) pages 135-139. Guild members lovingly refer to the handbook as the PEGs, at it also is free (a $35 value) to those who join the Guild.
WW Can you believe it? All this information I learned from the PEGs and a Guild Luncheon/Workshop I attended. It goes to show you that affiliating with professional organizations will provide you with a wealth of information.

WW I hope that helps.
WW Mark
