REVIEW OF ARTJAM 5: ANOTHER SMASHING SUCCESS!

ArtJam 5, the fifth Annual Northwest Illustrators & Photographers Show, was once again a smash success. The event was held on September 19, 2001, for the second time at classy Seattle Hilton in downtown Seattle, WA. The SPGA/Seattle Chapter of the Graphic Artists Guild invited the ASMP Seattle/Northwest to join us producing the event, for the first time showcasing the talent of both illustrators and photographers.

A large and enthusiastic event committee comprised of GAG and ASMP members organized during the spring of 2001 to plan the event, co-chaired by Lisa Shaftel, President of the SPGA/Seattle Chapter of the Guild and Tim Crosby, Co-President of the ASMP Seattle/Northwest. Barbara Combs of Gravity Shack Design was chosen as Art Director for ArtJam 5, and was bestowed a year's membership to the Guild by the SPGA/Seattle Chapter. A total of 54 artists and photographers participated as exhibitors; 21 were Guild members and 28 were ASMP members. One Graphic Artists Guild member, Bill Latta, came out to Seattle all the way from Tennessee! Other exhibitors came from as far as Portland, OR, and Vancouver, BC. Both organizations gained new members who joined to get the discounted rate for participating members.

A total of 2400 invitations were sent out to regional Northwest art buyers, as well as promotion by the website, ads in Media Inc., Marketing Magazine, and event listings in other regional publications. Considering the terrorist attack on our country only a week before, approximately 300 guests attended ArtJam 5, which was less than originally expected but a decent turnout nonetheless. Quite a few participants and guests contacted us right after the attack to inquire as to whether the event would be cancelled. No doubt many Americans were staying close to home and family at the time, choosing not to go out and taking a "wait and see" attitude for their businesses.

Those attending ArtJam 5 greatly enjoyed the event, giving many positive comments:

"Your Seattle Art Jam 5 event was all I anticipated it could be and more. Made a lot of contacts in the Seattle market and hope to hear from some of them in the near future. Art Jam 5 was simply first class and the attendance was more than I had expected - especially in light of the recent current events." Bill Latta, GAG illustrator

"I've been in Art Jam all 5 years and like the personal interactions, seeing some of my few Seattle clients, sensing the visual climate, and getting lots of positive strokes about my work. It's always of value and most years I've gotten at least one job to more than pay for the promotional event." GAG illustrator, requested to be anonymous

"I'm a photographer that participated in Art Jam 5. I would like to commend everyone involved in the organizing of this event. I know it was a huge amount of work!" Phil Banko, ASMP photographer

"I was very pleased with the response I was getting on the night. Previously I had not shown my work anywhere, so this was a big test for me. I am using the materials I produced for ArtJam to contact those on my own mailing list, and am very pleased that participation in ArtJam made me create new promotional pieces. Altogether, I'm really pleased I did it and am grateful for the opportunity. I hope to be able to do it again next year." Maggie Brunger, GAG illustrator
